WA unis climb global ranks

The University of Western Australia has fallen just short of its ambition to be a top 100-ranked institution in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, but gained ground alongside Curtin University, which also landed a higher position.

UWA climbed 14 places to 111 in the global ranking, while Curtin entered the 351-400 bracket, up from its previous place within the 401-500 bracket.

The higher rankings also resulted in UWA being placed as the seventh highest-ranked university in Australia, with Curtin coming in at 22 out of 35 institutions nationwide that were surveyed.

“This increase in the ranking aligns with UWA’s aim to attract new talent to the UWA community, as we position the university for future success,” UWA vice-chancellor Dawn Freshwater said.

“This is an outstanding result.”

Curtin acting vice-chancellor John Cordery said the university’s role as a leading global university had been further strengthened with the new rankings.

“Curtin’s notable performances were in citations and research productivity, which reflects the increase in papers published by our academics in quality peer-reviewed journals and income earned to undertake research,” he said.

“We also improved our standing in the teaching pillar results through an increase in the number of doctorates awarded per academic staff member, demonstrating the university’s commitment to attracting and training the next generation of leading researchers and academics.”
