The owners of the Ocean Beach Hotel and Il Lido in Cottesloe have been given the green light for redevelopment, with planning scheme changes unveiled today that allow for up to eight storeys at the popular beach.
Planning Minister John Day said changes to the Town of Cottesloe’s planning scheme had been finalised, implementing a general five-storey limit along the beachfront, but also allowing for eight storeys at the OBH and six storeys at Il Lido.
He said the changes, which finally put to rest years of debate over building heights along the beachfront, were made to ensure Cottesloe’s reputation as a premium beachside area remained intact.
“The existing beachfront needs to be upgraded to contemporary standards to provide for a variety of commercial businesses – like cafes, small bars and short-stay accommodation – along Marine Parade,” Mr Day said.
The five-storey limit will apply along Marine Parade from Eric and Forrest streets, while developments above three levels are required to be set back further on the block to reduce visual impact and overshadowing.
Premier Colin Barnett said the changes would enable appropriate redevelopment for the Cottesloe beachfront.
“This has been a long-running issue,” he said.
“I think this finally considers all perspectives and will enable the future growth of this area, without diminishing its unique character.
“Following this decision, I encourage the private landowners to now get on with the job of redeveloping Cottesloe to ensure the area goes ahead and reflects its world standing as an iconic coastal precinct.”
