The woman at the helm of Barrick Gold’s Granny Smith mine in the Yilgarn has been named Western Australia’s Business Woman of the Year in the 2012 Telstra awards.
Julie Shuttleworth has led a team of 700 people developing the gold mine since 2010.
But it was her sponsorship of a project designed to improve safety of underground miners when changing tyres which was largely responsible for her taking the top honour.
Her work experience also includes 18 years as a metallurgist, running a mine site with 2000 employees, and leading Barrick Gold’s Buzwagi Gold Project in Tanzania from feasibility status to production.
She was also awarded the business innovation award and private and corporate sector award for her work.
Previous winners of the Telstra Business Woman of the Year include Denise Goldsworthy and Gina Rinehart.
Fellow Barrick employee Allison Brown was named the Young Business Woman of the year for her role as environmental systems and development manager.
Other winners in the awards, announced today, include online education entrepreneur Olivia Humphrey for her work establishing Subiaco-based Kanopy and Johanna Cowdrey whose involvement in Aboriginal health earned her the community and government award.
The winners will now progress on to the national awards to be held next month.
